Scam Alerts

The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency is committed to educating North Carolinians about potential scams that may impact them. The Agency will never request personally identifiable information via text message or email. In addition, the Agency does not approve or issue Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers, nor would the Agency require those seeking these vouchers to come to the Agency office. Please read up on the current scams and known fraudulent activity below and learn more about avoiding mortgage and foreclosure prevention scams here.

Text Messaging Scam

The NC Housing Finance Agency does not utilize text messaging to communicate with consumers or partners. We have been made aware of a potential text scam using the name of the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. Please be advised that these text messages are fraudulent. The Agency recommends recipients of these messages not click any links, and to forward these messages to law enforcement.  

Attendee List Scam

We've been alerted to a scam targeting conference attendees and exhibitors. The NC Affordable Housing Conference and its partners will never sell the attendee list. Any offers to do so are not affiliated with us and should be reported. The attendee list is available in the conference app.

Housing Choice Email Scam

The NC Housing Finance Agency is alerting the public to a targeted online scam that is circulating in other states and may begin circulating in North Carolina. Scammers are sending personalized emails to individuals, falsely claiming that their Housing Choice application, also called Section 8, submitted by a “Housing Choice landlord,” has been approved by the Agency.

These emails are highly detailed, addressing recipients by their first and last names, referencing a housing specialist, and providing specifics about an available property. The fraudulent emails falsely claim that the Agency has approved the property and include the name and title of an Agency staff member as the sender. At this time, it remains unclear whether the targeted individuals had applied for the Housing Choice program or had any prior connection with the housing specialist mentioned in the email. Recipients of these emails are fraudulently instructed to complete an application and provide proof of identity.

Please note that the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency does not approve or issue Housing Choice Vouchers, which are administered locally by public housing agencies. The Agency is dedicated to protecting the public and actively raising awareness about fraudulent schemes. If you or someone you know has received such an email or submitted personal information in response to this scam, the NC Housing Finance Agency urges you to take immediate action by:

  • Filing a police report
  • Submitting a complaint to the North Carolina Department of Consumer Protection Complaint Center
  • Filing a report with the North Carolina Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission 

Section 8 Scam

We are aware of a fraudulent scam encouraging citizens to apply for Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers at the NC Housing Finance Agency. The Agency does not distribute Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers, and citizens are encouraged to contact their local housing authority: https://www.hud.gov/.../documents/PHA_Contact_Report_NC.pdf or call 800-955-2232.
