How to Buy a Home as a Military Veteran

In celebration of National Veterans and Military Families Month, the Home Matters Blog will be discussing how to buy a home as a military veteran. We know it’s not easy to put down roots as a service member, but veterans have many unique opportunities available to them to help make home happen. Check out our tips below to get started!

Connect with a Housing Counselor
A housing counselor can help you navigate the home buying process, especially as a military veteran or first-time buyer. They will review your credit score, monthly income and expenses and provide recommendations to help get you prepared to own a home. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau can help you find a HUD-approved counseling agency in your area.

Talk to a Lender
A lender will be able to explain all the financial options available to you. Many veterans will utilize the VA Home Loan because you won’t need to put in a down payment, however, you’ll still need to pay closing costs. Fortunately, our NC 1st Home Advantage Down Payment can be combined with a VA Home Loan and offers $15,000 in assistance for eligible military veterans that can also be used towards closing costs. Use our Find a Lender tool to find an Agency participating lender near you.

Find a Real Estate Agent
Once you know how much home you can afford, a real estate agent will be the next tool in your home buying belt that you need. A real estate agent will know the area you’re moving to better than anyone and may even be able to help you find the perfect neighborhood for your needs. Our Find a Real Estate Agent tool can help you find an Agency-preferred agent.

Once you’ve taken the steps above, you’ll be on your way to home ownership in no time! While it can be a confusing process to navigate on your own, having a team of professionals will put you on the right track and make the home buying journey much simpler and more exciting. Check out some of our past Home Matters blogs to learn even more about buying a home.
